here’s the problem with being born in the ’70s published on

the problem with being born in the ’70s is there are a lot – i mean, a lot – of songs written about women by name.

no, my name's not sara.
i’m not smiling.

the thing is – i have one of those names. because, well – funny story. dad refused to let mom name me a name that could be shortened down to a name that was androgynous. so, at the last minute, i got named a name that was in not one, not two, but like, five songs at the time.

furthering this issue, is the fact that the bf – the man i love – he loves the music of the ’70s. which means that on any given day, i’m likely to hear at least one of those songs. sometimes two. occasionally at least three of them.

thanks, mom.

and yeah, i know that this is not exactly unique to just the ’70s. the bf’s mom, for instance, has a name that is featured heavily in a song from the ’60s, and also one from the ’70s. the difference, of course, is she was born long before those – so people don’t just automatically whip their heads around to look at her and belt it out along with the radio when they’re on. me? not so lucky. people love to point out, “oh, hey, this song is about you, isn’t it? your parents named you after this one, didn’t they?”

the first time i ever met the piano man, i thanked him for never, ever, ever playing one of those when i’m around, no matter who asked. he’s been so kind as to not. so far. * pro tip: bake the man cookies.

and i guess if you’re wondering why i’m even bringing this up, the truth is, i dunno. it’s just one of those random thoughts that’s been rattling around in my head for a while now. thought i’d shake it loose. also, i don’t think guys have this problem half as often as us chicks do.

say “goodnight,” gracie.
